Amateur Radio Technician License Class Winter 2018

posted Nov 29, 2017, 7:16 PM by Jeremy Betz

Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communications together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need.

The FCC Technician License exam covers basic regulations, operating practices and electronics theory, with a focus on VHF and UHF applications. You don’t need any prior experience or familiarity with electronics and you do not have to learn Morse Code! Technicians may operate FM voice, digital packet (computers), television, single-sideband voice and several other interesting modes. You can even make international radio contacts via satellites, using relatively simple station equipment.

Woodmont Founders Patio

posted Oct 20, 2016, 4:03 PM by Jeremy Betz   [ updated Nov 30, 2017, 6:27 PM ]

The Borough of Woodmont is building a "Founders Patio" with custom engraved bricks in front of the borough hall.  The borough is charging to have names or messages engraved in the bricks to help pay for the patio and associated landscaping.  The charge is $50 per brick or $200 for 5 bricks.  Each brick can have up to three rows of thirteen characters.  We are asking WARA members to donate $8.34 to have their call sign engraved on a brick.  Each brick can fit six call signs.

We are asking for club members to participate in this project to memorialize our appreciation for all the borough has done and continues to do to support us.

Each brick would look like the one depicted below.

If we order 4 bricks (24 Call signs) we can put in a Club brick for free!

The annual radio propagation test has been scheduled for Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:00am and should run until about 2:00pm. Please let Ed (wa1lei@yahoo.com) know if you are able to support this event. In order to participate, you will need to have a 2m mobile station in your car that can support 35-50 watts output, or you will need to be paired with someone who does. Unfortunately HTs are not powerful enough to be used in this test.
